45. Religion must not be a refuge for those who are capable of living in the world and enjoying the advantages that life can offer without finding anything to affirm or deny, pleasure or commitment. Anyone who is so intimidated by the realities of the world that he considers death to be a form of deliverance often has psychological problems or an illness or a problem with what he considers his vital interests. Truly human individuals can only avoid this danger by accepting the responsibility that is implicit in life, even though an increase of responsibilities can also entail a certain sacrifice, followed by forgetfulness and eventually shame. True religious freedom cannot be conceived under any conditions other than the internalization of the religious dimension of the very nature of man that is organised, cultivated, perfected and guided by his own persons. Only in this way is prayer possible, prayer that is as much an expression of the person as its development is an expression of the form of life. For the given individual, who is also at the same time “the whole person” (cf. Lk 10:14-15); prayer is an expression of the dimension of the mystical experience that, beyond the individual, is shared by all humanity or rather is its essence, since it is mankind’s relation to God. After teaching that prayer was a meeting with God in the person of Jesus Christ (cf. Lk 24:9), Bl. John Paul II goes on to say that “it is to Jesus that all of humanity is turned to request forgiveness and to give an account to the living God”.[361 ]
67. In human society, which is the result of people uniting in order to pursue a common good, there are so many individuals of different purposes and interests that the community of commerce is the effect and not the cause of a universal system of justice.

We human beings must go beyond setting incentives or penalties for our acts, and beyond all forms of their justification or condemnation, to establishing incentives and standards for thinking, feeling and acting. Such an action expresses the very depth of our humanity. This task requires an understanding of man’s true vocation, which consists in maintaining a relationship with God through supernatural grace.
