What’s New In BitCrush?
The BitCrush effect is perhaps the biggest leap forward in parameters in the Electribe series. It allows you to change the number of bits per sample and the sample rate, without necessarily changing the output format (sampling rate & bit depth).
This gives the effect a wide array of new possibilities, such as turning a 2-bit audio file into a 16-bit audio file (using a sample rate of 48kHz), or a 96 kHz sample rate into a 32-bit or a 24-bit file (using the higher-sampling-rate 2-bit audio file).
In addition, the BitCrush effect is simply the most logical next step after the SubOctave, which allows you to cut down a frequency without changing the sampling rate.
BitCrush Performance:
Due to its simplicity, BitCrush allows you to quickly drop and pick back up audio files. For example, you could use the BitCrush to take a 16-bit audio file that uses 96 kHz sampling (and only goes up to 24 kHz, for example), and turn it into a 16-bit file that uses 24 kHz sampling (with a higher sampling rate, 48kHz, for example), while dropping the frequency by half (hopefully while leaving an audible amount of information in the file)!
BitCrush has a good performance without CPU issues. When you’re working with a single audio file, the CPU usage is very low, and the process is instant.
BitCrush’s Complexity:
This module is one of the most complex modules in Electribe, but it is actually extremely easy to use. There’s really only one setting to change, which is a rate multiplier (and the bit depth multiplier).
In addition, BitCrush is just one of two modules that allow you to change the sampling rate of an audio file (or audio samples) without changing the bit depth. The SubOctave effect actually does the opposite of BitCrush (goes down in bit depth without changing the sampling rate) and is much more complex, so we’ll be covering the SubOctave effect in more detail later on.

The BitCrush effect has a great low end, and a great high end. On most audio files, the effect (at it’s most extreme settings) simply sounds like a bit of crushing. The effect is almost digital sounding, in the best way possible.
