Comparing Lightroom and Photoshop
As you move toward mastering Adobe Lightroom, you see many similarities in its features to Adobe Photoshop, so it is a good idea to know what you can expect in a comparison chart (refer to Figure 5-1).
The following are some of the similarities found in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom:
Multiple file versions: Both programs offer multiple file versions (also called edit files) that enable you to store a previous, or past, version of your image. Once an image is opened, you can store up to 20 edit versions; the number depends on the length of time you wait for the edits to be applied. It’s a good idea to have more than one copy. An alternative to this is to use the Auto-save function, which saves your file as you create it. You can save edit files from within the program as well as through external (plug-in) applications.
New files: When you make any changes to your image with the editing controls, a new file is created with the changes. You can compare the new file to the original file to see the changes, and you can also replace the new image with the original file to undo the editing if you decide that the new file is a better one.
Layer masking: Lightroom layers work like Photoshop layers. You apply a mask to each layer, which allows you to hide specific sections of the image. You can mask areas of an image, as well as edit the various parts of the image by changing the opacity of the mask. Layers can be applied to both channels, or to the red, green, and blue (RGB) colors of the image.
Batch processing: Batch processing enables you to process multiple files at the same time. The program can build up a list of files to process, and you can process multiple files at a time. You can also view the list of files to process, and turn on the processing of multiple files at once.
Images organized within the Library: The Library is a feature of Lightroom that allows you to organize your images by type. You can create folders to store your images by the type of file — for example, photos, video, or slideshows. In addition, you can easily change the type of file within the Library.

Even if you know how to edit images using Photoshop, you might not know how to do it with Photoshop Elements. It’s not as technically challenging as Photoshop but it’s not as user-friendly. Smart Objects
Smart Objects are features available in some of the latest versions of Photoshop and Photoshop Elements that make working with images so much easier.
Smart Objects are like templates. You can use them as placeholders for a new image or you can use them to reuse images and layers in multiple projects.
Smart Objects include all the tools you need to edit the image. You have the option of reusing the tools in another project.
In the following sections, you’ll learn how to apply Smart Objects, edit them and remove them.
How to use Smart Objects
You can access Smart Objects by clicking the New smart object button at the bottom of the Layers Panel.
Once you click the button, you’ll notice that Photoshop Elements displays a new space in the Layers Panel. This area has a preview of the image that you’re about to work with.
Follow these steps to start a new project using Smart Objects:
Click the New smart object button.

. Double-click the thumbnail of the Smart Object on the canvas.
When you’re working with a new Smart Object, the Layers panel is empty. When you double-click a Smart Object, you’ll notice that it looks like the layers in the active document.
Note: It’s usually best to create Smart Objects for one-off projects. Reusing Smart Objects is more convenient and efficient if you’re creating a new project.
How to edit images with Smart Objects
If you’re working with Smart Objects, you can apply the tools and filters directly to the Smart Object. You can also add layer styles and masks.

Superintendent Prepares for Lockout
CUMMING — The Cobb County School District has sent a SWAT team to an elementary school to prepare for a potential lockout after a fight between two students escalated to a shooting Wednesday.
The incident started as a fight that involved several students, but ended when one, 15-year-old Richard “Stank” Polite, fired four shots into a table and the floor at Hunter Elementary School. Polite was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, but his family says he was only defending himself.
“I think that they were really trying to do a quick interview and got scared. They didn’t have time to read his rights to him,” Polite’s grandfather, Charles Coggins, said.
The Troup County Sheriff’s Office first got a 911 call about the argument at 7:22 a.m., and arrived on the scene at 7:30 a.m. Two students who saw the shooting told police they believed it was an accident, but didn’t know what had happened.
The two students who shot Polite were detained for questioning and released without being arrested. Polite said he acted in self-defense, according to police.
The superintendent at Hunter Elementary, Larry Rubin, said he was “shocked” and “embarrassed” when he learned about the shooting. Rubin said he has been working with the principal, several administrators and the SWAT team to prepare for a lockout, in which the students would be escorted out of the building by a deputy and not allowed to return until the lockdown is lifted.
“I’m learning more and more every day about the rules. I just don’t think I’ve seen them.” Rubin said.
The district has told the parents of the students who reported the shooting about the incident at Hunter Elementary and is sending home packets with information about the process. The name of the second student involved in the fight hasn’t been made public.
Polite’s parents said they plan to take their son to trial if there’s enough evidence to prove his innocence.Q:
